DIRECTOR'S NOTE:

Thank you for attending Rhode Island College’s production of Small Mouth Sounds, by Bess Wohl.

“In the overwhelming quiet of the woods, six runaways from city life embark on a silent retreat. As these strangers confront internal demons both profound and absurd, their vows of silence collide with the achingly human need to connect.” (synopsis)

Small Mouth Sounds is an unusual play that asks us to heighten our powers of observation – to pay attention to people who are struggling, observing the ridiculous ways in which we misunderstand each other, as well as the limited cultural vocabulary we have for mourning, grief, and healing.

Our team of student artists – both onstage and off – are doing a beautiful job of bringing Bess Wohl’s characters and their challenges to life. Their work allows us to follow these broken people as they search for answers to the pain that traps them, as well as struggle with the silence mandate that is meant to help them.

Many of us can appreciate a complicated relationship to silence. As we continue to stumble our way out of pandemic limitations, we may find ourselves avoiding silence, and its association with isolation. Or we may find ourselves choosing to stay in quiet and solitude in order to escape the noise and static that exist in our current public arena.

While poking gentle fun at the trappings of the silent retreat and the Zen-master instructor who guides the participants through this week, Wohl also asks us to consider what happens, what is revealed, when we take away speech? What boundaries are crossed, what space is violated? But also, what connections can be forged? What are the limitations of these connections? How do we find the patience and quiet to understand the struggles of other people as we figure out solutions to our own problems and fears?

Thank you again, for coming to see this show, and for celebrating the work of our theatre arts students, both cast and crew!

Head Over Heels is the bold new musical comedy from the visionaries that rocked Broadway with Hedwig and the Angry InchAvenue Q, and Spring Awakening. This laugh-out-loud love story is set to the music of the iconic 1980’s all-female rock band The Go-Go’s, including the hit songs, “We Got the Beat,” “Our Lips Are Sealed,” “Vacation,” Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven is a Place on Earth” and “Mad About You.” A hilarious, exuberant celebration of love, HEAD OVER HEELS follows the escapades of a royal family on an outrageous journey to save their beloved kingdom from extinction—only to discover the key to their realm’s survival lies within each of their own hearts.

Nothing is the End of the World (except for the end of the world)

by Bekah Brunstetter

  • Directed by Eliza Vecchiarelli
  • April 28th & 29th at 7:30pm
  • April 30th at 1:00pm

In the near-distant future, an NYC charter school becomes the first to welcome artificially intelligent students. However, new AI students Olive and Godfrey receive a chilly welcome from the already self-conscious and stressed-out members of the Junior class. When a reality show swoops in to capture this social experiment on camera, the priorities and moralities of the student body are turned inside-out. At turns both droll and touching, this dark new play questions how we reconcile the thin line between our ever-improving technologies and what it means to be human.
